Information for Performers

REGISTRATIONS FOR 2021 ARE NOW OPEN!

The 2021 Melbourne International Comedy Festival will take place from 24 March to 18 April.

We are increasingly confident that shows in front of real, live, decently sized audiences will be possible in 2021 so we are moving forward with optimism. There are still many unknowns, including exactly what kind of audience capacity restrictions may be in place. However, now is the time to start exploring options and to think about what kind of show you may like to do, where you might want to do it and what kind of information or support you might need.

This year there is no hard closing date for registrations but there will be milestone dates attached to various promotional opportunities. Details about our key marketing dates will be provided in an update very soon. We’d encourage those who can, to have registrations finalised by Monday 4 January so that your show page is up on our website with minimum delay.

Venues
A list of venues that will be open for Festival shows is available through the potential venues form here or the Venues tab on our on our registration site. Venues are being added regularly.

The number of Festival Managed Venues (FMVs) we’ll be building in 2021 will be significantly reduced due to coping with COVID-based logistics. Expression of Interests for FMVs are now open – read our Guide to FMV Applications and apply here. Applications close on Monday 7 December. Due to limited availability competition for the spaces will no doubt be high so we urge interested participants to explore a range of venue options and chat to us if you need help.

Venue Capacities and COVIDSafe Plans
We are currently modelling our FMVs for audiences at four square metres per person and two square metres per person. We are preparing to deliver at the smallest capacities of 4sqm pp but will be able to scale up quickly to larger capacities as soon as regulations allow. We urge all prospective participants to look at their budget models in the same way. Of course if we’re at COVID Normal, capacities may be even greater and everyone will be very happy!

Every venue will be required to have a COVIDSafe Plan that complies with Victorian Government requirements. We are developing templates for participants to supply to venues who need help developing adequate and appropriate resources.

Registration fees
In recognition of the tough year everyone has had, we are reducing our registration fee for 2021 to a flat $350. Cancellations prior to Monday 11 January 2021 will receive a 100% refund. Scaled cancellation fees will be required for any cancellations from Tuesday 12 January 2021 and details will be available shortly.

We hope that state borders will be open by Festival-time so that any Australian comedians who wish to participate will be free to come. It is not anticipated that international artists will be able to secure visas by March 2021 but we are monitoring that situation carefully.
